How to check if a mover is licensed in California.

Movers that work within California need a household mover permit from the state. Here is how to check one before you book.

Short answer: ask the mover for its legal business name and household mover permit number, then look it up with California’s Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS). The permit should be active, in good standing, and the mover insured.

Check a mover in four steps

  1. Get the details. Ask for the legal business name and the household mover permit number. A licensed mover gives both without hesitation.
  2. Search the state record. Use the license search on the BHGS household movers page.
  3. Confirm the status. BHGS advises checking that the permit is active, in good standing, and that the mover is insured.
  4. Match the names. The business name on your estimate and agreement should match the state record.

What a licensed mover must give you

According to BHGS, movers within California must:

  • Provide a moving services agreement, an “Important Notice About Your Move” and the booklet “Important Information for Persons Moving Household Goods” when you book three or more days ahead.

Red flags

  • No permit number, or a name that doesn’t match the state record.
  • A large cash deposit up front.

Moving out of state?

Moves that cross state lines are regulated federally. Interstate movers register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and have a USDOT number; check them there in addition to any state record.

If something goes wrong

File a complaint with BHGS online at bhgs.dca.ca.gov or by phone at (916) 999-2041 (BHGS). Claims for loss or damage must be made to the mover in writing within nine months after delivery.
