How much should you tip movers?

What customers actually leave on our Los Angeles moves, worked out per mover for common job lengths.

Short answer: tipping is optional. When our customers tip, they usually leave 15–20% of the moving bill, split among the crew, and rarely more than $100 per mover. For a 4-hour move with two movers that is about $43–$58 each.

Tip per mover by job length

Calculated at 15–20% of the Movers-LA labor cost for each example, divided by the number of movers and capped at $100 each.

MoveLabor costTip per mover
2 movers, 2 hours (studio)$300$22–$30
2 movers, 4 hours (1-bedroom)$579$43–$58
2 movers, 6 hours (large 1-bedroom)$837$63–$84
3 movers, 5 hours (2-bedroom)$960$48–$64
4 movers, 7 hours (3-bedroom)$1,650$62–$82
2 movers, 8 hours$1,095$82–$100

Time on these examples is work plus billable driving. If your bill came from a company with a minimum or add-on fees, base the tip on the labor, not the fees.

Do you have to tip movers?

No. A tip is a thank-you for careful, fast work, not part of the price. Our rates already include the crew’s pay, and a tip should never be requested. Customers tip more when the crew protects floors and furniture, works steadily without stretching the clock, and handles stairs or a long carry without complaint.

When to tip less or nothing

  • Furniture or walls were damaged and nobody told you.
  • The crew took long breaks or slowed down on an hourly job.
  • The crew was rude or asked for a tip.

Damage should be reported to the company in writing, separately from any tip decision.

How to tip

  • At the end. Tip after the last item is placed and you have checked the furniture.
  • To each mover. Hand each person their share so it reaches everyone who carried your things.
  • Cash is simplest. If you want to tip another way, ask the office before moving day.
  • Water and snacks on a hot day are appreciated, but they don’t replace a tip if you want to leave one.
